Registering a death

In England and Wales, a death must be registered by the Registrar of Births and Deaths for the area in which the death has occurred. If you are unsure whether you have the authority to register the death, we can advise you.

Contact Clive Pugh Funeral Directors for more details about registering a death.

We serve Shrewsbury, Shropshire and Mid-Wales.

The Registrar requires the following details:

  • Full name of the deceased

  • Home address

  • Date and place of death

  • Date and place of birth

  • Last occupation

  • Date of birth of surviving partner

  • Whether the deceased was in receipt of a Pension or Allowance from public funds

If the deceased was a married woman:

  • Maiden name

  • Husband's full name (even if deceased)

  • Husband's last occupation (even if deceased)

From the Informant:

  • Full name of Informant

  • Home address

The Registrar will issue:

  • A green certificate – which will be emailed to the funeral director so that the funeral can take place

  • A white certificate – this is for social security purposes

Copies of the death certificate can be purchased from the Registrar. You may need these for:

  • Pension claims

  • Insurance policies

  • Your Bank or Building Society

  • Premium Bonds

Tell Us Once Service

This allows the Registrar to notify other government departments and council services of the death. This will save you doing so.

To make sure the right information is given to any organisation they contact for you, and so that you get the most out of the service, please take the following information about the person that has died with you when attending the appointment:

  • National Insurance number and date of birth

  • Details of any Benefits or Allowances they were receiving

  • Driving Licence

  • Passport

  • Blue Badge (disabled parking)

You may also be asked for the details of:

  • Next of kin

  • A surviving husband, wife or civil partner

  • The person dealing with the estate

‘Nothing was too much trouble’

Clive Pugh Funeral Directors did an amazing funeral for my father, as they did for my mother 8 years ago. Everything was organised down to the last detail and their suggestions to make the day go more smoothly were perfect. Nothing was too much trouble. I would 100% recommend them.
